Common Description
Hemifacial Microsomia is characterised by the strking asymmetry of the face, where one side of the face appears smaller than the other. It is the most common birth defect after cleft lip and palate.

Characteristics
- External ear is malformed to varying degrees
- The angle of the mouth has a lateral cleft lengthening the mouth towards the abnormal ear
- Facial asymmetry, varying from mild to severe
- Lower jaw may be slightly shortened or be completly absent in the ascending portion

DDMS Process and Procedure
Professor David, has developed a protocol, in conjunction with the Australian Craniofacial Unit, that incorporates a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. This treatment extends from birth until early adulthood when full development is complete.
